INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

Prerequisite: None
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
What image comes to mind when you hear the word business? Some people think of
their jobs, others think of the merchants they support as consumers, and still
others think of profit. Business drives the economic pulse of a nation. Whether
you decide to start your own business, work for a small, family-run business, or
sign on with a large international corporation, your achievements will depend on
your ability to maintain the constant pace of change in today’s world. This
course builds the foundation and discusses the strategies that allow people to
compete in today’s interactive marketplace. Students will also
develop critical thinking skills necessary to understand options in making decisions as
consumers and provides them with the knowledge of how to handle these
situations. Areas covered include ethics, communication, economics, personal
finance, international business, business law, consumer action, taxes, career
development, and college exploration.
COMPUTER LITERACY
.5 Credit
One semester - Required
Grade Level: 9, l0, 11, 12
This course develops an awareness and understanding of the use of computers in the
world today. Instruction includes the history, terminology, and diversity of
computer equipment as well as an overview of the three most popular software
applications. This course will also focus on the proper keying technique and
posture one should have for keyboarding. The goal in this course will be to
help students increase speed and accuracy with their keying by the end of the
semester. The course will also touch introduce the basic skills one would need
to manipulate a Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Documents.
MICROCOMPUTER APPLICATIONS
1 Credit
Full Year - Elective
Prerequisite: Computer Literacy
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
This is a full-year computer course. The time frame allows students to more fully
develop their understanding and skills in using computers and software
applications. It includes the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and
presentation software, interactive presentation media, and basic web design. The
student is given a wider variety of activities that will aid them in
transferring the knowledge gained in this course to computers and software
encountered at colleges or in the job market.
COMPUTER PROGRAMING

One Semester – Elective
Prerequisite: Computer Literacy
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
Students interested in video game design will also be able to learn the basics through
a free computer programing called “Alice”. Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to
create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video
to share on the web. Alice is a teaching tool for introductory computing. It
uses 3D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface to facilitate a more engaging,
less frustrating first programming experience.
ACCOUNTING I
1 Credit
Full Year -- Elective
Prerequisite: None
Grade Level: 11, 12
Accounting I introduces the students to accounting procedures and practices. Students will
learn the principles of preparing and analyzing financial records in order to
maintain an accounting system for business or personal use. Accounting is
recommended for the college-bound student as well as for the student interested
in entry-level employment.
DIGITAL IMAGING

OneSemester - Elective
Grade Level: 9,10,11,12
In this course the students will learn to use the computer and the software
applications Adobe Photoshop Elements and Microsoft Digital Imaging. Students
will explore both the technical aspects of image manipulation, as well as the
artistic aspects of creating images. They will be introduced to the use of
palettes, layers, masks, image editing and painting. The students will learn to
manipulate images for creative as well as practical purposes.
SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS I
1 Credit
Full Year-Elective
Prerequisite: Digital Imaging
Grade Level: 11, 12
School Publications I is designed to assist with the publication of Schlarman Academy’s
yearbook. The students will learn the correct use of digital camera equipment,
online graphic design, and the organizational tools necessary to work as a unit
to produce a completed yearbook. This class is open to students of all grades.
There will be a $10 lab fee for School Publications I.
SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS II

Prerequisite: School Publications I
Grade Level: 11, 12
School Publications II requires students to demonstrate and further refine their
understanding of the major skills and technical features taught in School
Publications I. Students will be involved in the planning and design of the
school yearbook and other publications of Schlarman
Academy.
